Our Story

The Sandwich Project is dedicated to addressing food insecurity in the metro Atlanta/Athens area. By employing a network of dedicated volunteers, we create and deliver fresh, homemade sandwiches to individuals in need. We believe in the transformative power of community, compassion, and kindness—and in the fundamental right of every person to access nourishing food.

Our journey began in mid-2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic profoundly impacted countless lives, including many of our neighbors who struggled with food insecurity. Even as the urgency of COVID has eased, housing costs, inflation, and systemic inequities force many families into impossible choices between food and other basic needs.

Since our inception, The Sandwich Project has donated more than two million sandwiches and thousands of pounds of nutritious food to nonprofit partners of all sizes, who serve individuals living with food insecurity.

Our mission is simple and steadfast: to fight food insecurity, to foster a spirit of service among neighbors, and to ensure that every person has access to sufficient, nourishing food to thrive. Together, we are building a stronger, more compassionate community.

Hunger & Food Insecurity in Georgia

  • A primary goal of The Sandwich Project is to educate our community regarding food insecurity. 1 out of 8 families in the Atlanta Metro Area live with food insecurity.

  • The percentage of Georgians experiencing food insecurity is roughly 11%.

    • Surprisingly, more than a third of these people are ineligible for food assistance programs in the state. More than half of those who are food insecure have full-time jobs or work more than one job.

Several prominent members of The Sandwich Project have completed ServSafe certification, demonstrating our commitment to food safety and quality. This certification is earned by completing a comprehensive training program, ensuring that our team is well-equipped with the knowledge and skills to handle food safely and effectively. By adhering to the highest standards of food safety, we can provide nutritious meals to those in need while maintaining the trust and well-being of our community.
